Huntington Beach Sunset

I took this shot a little while back at Huntington Beach in Southern California. It has been a little bit since I have had internet, so there are a few pictures that I haven’t posted yet so I’ll try to put some up. Unfortunately I don’t have all the photos I want to post so my selection is limited but I’ll get them on here eventually. Anyway, this shot was taken in different parts. One part was the sky, another part for the water, and multiple parts were used for the pier. All in all it is more of a composite that I created from multiple picture of the same spot. If you want to learn about some of the techniques I used or are interested in getting different prints that may not be available through my site please feel free to email me on the contact tab up top.

Singapore

I took this shot while I was in Singapore during deployment. This was by far one of the best ports I have been to since I have been with the military. It was real nice and clean and there was actually things to see and do besides bars. I took this shot from way up hgh in a building that looked like a cruise ship was on top of it. I saw this sweet view and fortunately we all decided to stay at that spot until sunset. This is an HDR that is made up of -2, 0, and +2 exposures. I merged these three exposures in Photomatix and then masked through the better layers in Photoshop. Hope you like the results.

Family Photos

This is from a shoot I did for my friend and his family. We shot at Onofre beach off Camp Pendleton. This is one of my first time working with kids and it turned out to be pretty fun. They were definitely a learning experience and I was able to get some great pictures with them. Thanks for having me as your photographer guys! This is a RAW image that was processed in Photoshop CS6.

Doomed Youth

Took a few more shots of my buddy Steven Feusi while we were at Huntington Beach the other day. What can I say, he like getting his picture taken and I like taking pictures so it works out. You can check out his tumbler page by clicking on his name in this post. This is a RAW image file that I processed in Photoshop CS6. I love this lens. It is a Rokinon f/1.4 85mm. It gives awesome blur effects on the subjects. Let me know what you think or go to Steven’s page and give him some love.

Dramatic Sunset

Took this shot at Corona Del Mar over at the Newport Beach area. It was the first nice night I have been out for picture in a while. Lately I haven’t had to great of luck with the weather for some reason but it worked out on this visit. This is a RAW image file with a bit of work done to it. I masked through the sky to bring in another sky I had saved in one of my folders. I also applied some Nik Color Effex filters and levels adjustments. I masked through the -2 and +2 exposures as well. Hope you like the results.

Black and White Calm

I took this photo some time ago at Corona Del Mar beach near Laguna, CA. This was super early in the morning before the sun even set and is a real long exposure. I had wanted to keep it minimal with what was included in the shot and I think it worked out. I can’t remember since this was an old photo but I don’t think I even used an ND filter because of how dark it was. Either way, this is a RAW photo that was processed in Photoshop CS6 and turned to black and white with Nik Silver Effex Pro.

Vernal Falls

Vernal Falls was by far the nicest waterfall in Yosemite National Park in my opinion. It is a short hike off the main road that runs through the park. Once you start getting close to the falls you have to climb a set of stairs and you start to get sprinkled with the mist from the water hitting the rocks. You can walk all the way to the top where there is a large pool of water that’s awesome for swimming in, especially after hiking around all day. I stitched two images together for this one since I don’t have a wide angle lens. I processed the photo in Photoshop CS6 with Nik Color Effex Pro.

Yosemite Valley View

I took this shot at tunnel view in Yosemite Valley National Park. This is one of the most photographed sights in all of Yosemite. This is a RAW image file that I processed in Photoshop CS6 with Nik Color Effex Pro. I hit this spot during the summer which is supposedly not the best time to go but I was able to grab a few good shots. Hope you like it.

Merced Stream

I finally got to visit Yosemite National Park in Northern California. I took this shot from a bridge that crossed over the stream that was near the bottom of Nevada Falls. This was the nicest spot I have been at in America thus far. I felt like everywhere I looked there was an opportunity for a picture. The size of the peaks like El Capitan and Half Dome where bigger that any picture I had seen. There will definitely be more photos to come. The photo picture here is actually comprised of 9 shots. 3 shots were taken for 3 different positions and -2, 0, and +2. I masked through the layers to get the best possible looking shot for each and then stitched them together to make a larger image  considering I don’t have a wide angle lens. This was processed in Photoshop CS6. I also used Nik Color Effex Pro.

Lighthouse Reflection

I took this at Palomar Lighthouse in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I had this image saved and hadn’t planned on working on it. It wasn’t until I had to go on ship for about a month with the military when I decided to try processing it. This is a RAW image file that was processed in Photoshop CS6. I used the Nik Color Effex Pro plugin as well as basic levels and curves adjustments. I masked out the background for a better suited one considering the day that I had actually taken this image was cloudy and boring. I hope you like the results and let me know what you think.

Tower 23

This shot was taken at Ponto Beach in Carlsbad, California. If you go on the main beach and just walk North on the shore towards the campground you will find this spot. I liked it because there was no one there and there were rocks everywhere which made for a cool foreground subject. This is a RAW image file that I processed in Photoshop CS6 using Nik Color Effex Pro and basic levels and curves adjustment. I adjusted the color of this picture as well because the original shot had a green hue because I had used a piece of welder’s glass for a 10 stop filter. Hope you like the results.

Palmer Island Lighthouse

This is a shot of Palmer Island Lighthouse over in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This was my first visit here considering I am not home very often, being stationed in California and all. I went here with my sister and her husband. When we got here there was a gate blocking the way saying “No Trespassing” and to something of the effect of government officials only. We saw a few other people on the other side that didn’t fit the part so we figured we would be alright and just crossed over. It was a small hike to where the lighthouse was but it was worth it. This is a RAW image that was processed in Photoshop CS6. I have been moving away from HDR images as I’m sure some of you may have noticed with my recent photos. I like the more natural look it and it requires more skill in my opinion.

Helen

I took this shot of my Mom while I was back home on leave. This was taken near the end of the day before the sun set in my backyard. I used a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 lens which has an awesome depth of field. This is a single RAW image that was minimally processed in Photoshop CS6. All the lighting in this shot was also natural.

Brittney

This beautiful girl is my girlfriend Brittney Kinnas. She came from Massachusetts to visit me in California for a weekend and I took some pictures of her. We almost weren’t able to see each other because the Marine Corps is a pain and never tells us anything until last minute so when she already had her flight I was supposed to still be out in the field training for a large portion of the time she was down. Fortunately some things got switched around and it ended up working out. I hit up some key Southern California spots while she was out here like Huntington Library, San Diego Zoo, and even went on a hot air balloon ride. It was pretty awesome. This photo was shot with a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 lens and was minimally processed in Photoshop CS6. All that was done were curves and levels adjustments and some dodging and burning. Hope you like the end result.

Sunset Cliffs

Pictured here is Sunset Cliffs. This is in Southern California near San Diego. It is a beautiful stretch of cliffs that run along the coast for miles. I have wanted to go for a while and finally decided to venture out and see how it was. Turns out it was pretty amazing. I found a little path that went down to the beach which consisted of what looked like mostly locals. Right off the beach you could climb on the rocks and go even farther down where no one was. This, of course, I did. There was this large rock pictured below which I believe is called bird rock, for obvious reasons, that was just off the shoreline that I knew would make for great pictures. I had the time so I figured I would try different angles and filters so I slapped on the big piece of welders glass. It was the middle of the day and it was cloudy so I knew there wouldn’t be a glare and the picture would probably turn out fairly decent but I didn’t expect such great results. This is a 30 second exposure that was taken and later brought into Photoshop CS6 to edit. I replaced the dull colorless cloudy sky with a better one I had in reserve and corrected some of the colors from the green welders glass makeshift filter as well. Hope you like the end result. If you have any questions about the welders glass filter feel free to ask.

Steven

Introducing Steven Feusi. This is my buddy from the Marine Corps that was willing to let me take some pictures of him. We had some time off after work so we went out back near his car which happens to be a sweet red Chevy Nova. He was super embarrassed because I had him dress somewhat nice and we were around the barracks where we live with people walking around but it still worked out. It was his first time in front of the camera for a shooting session so being a little uncomfortable is understandable. I can imagine how awkward it must feel with someone just staring at you through a lens. This picture was shot while he was sitting in the front seat of his car with the door open. The light was awesome because it was in the shade and the sun was behind him so I barely touched this photo. All I did was brighten his pupils a bit and take away some blemishes. The new lens makes such a difference for portrait pictures. It’s amazing. I suggest to anyone who is serious to take portraits to go out and get a 85mm F/1.4. It gives it that soft professional look.

San Clemente Girl

This isn’t actually a photo I took but I wanted to put it up because my buddy Steven had taken it and I helped with the editing. Unfortunately my friend didn’t catch her name so I can’t say who this is exactly but he spotted her while we were hanging out at the beach. I was teaching him how to use this new 84mm f/1.4 lens that I bought and he couldn’t help but want to take this girls photo. He went over and asked for permission and she was kind enough to say yes. The clouds were covering the sun at the time so it made for a real nice filtered light which accentuated the natural beauty of the girl. He did a great job with the actually taking of the photo considering he has minimal experience with photography. You can find my friend who took this on tumbler here. His name is Steven Feusi, Hope you like our collaborative efforts at making a photo. And thank you to whomever you are San Clemente girl.

Red Sky

This was taken at Corona Del Mar beach near Laguna, CA. A lot of processing went into this one because I didn’t initially like how the sky looked so I replaced it with another photo that I had in reserve to use for just that purpose. I initially started off by combing three exposures into an HDR in Photomatix and brought the result into Photoshop. From here I masked through the better parts of the various photos until I came out with what I wanted. I then cut out the sky and replaced it and multiplied the sky layer on top so it looked like it reflected on the water. From here the rest of the processing was all fine adjustments here and there. Hope you like the result! Let me know what you think.

Japanese Shack

This is an old photo that I took back while I was on deployment in Okinawa a little over a year ago. I was going through some of my older photos and never got around to processing this one so I decided to give it a shot since I hadn’t taken any new photos this weekend. This is situated right outside of Shuri Castle in Okinawa. This is made up of 3 JPEG images that were combined into an HDR in Photomatix. I took the HDR and masked through the original layers to keep the better parts of the photos and processed the whole image in Photoshop CS6. Hope you like it!

Teddy & Maryam

This photo was for one of my friends that I met in my unit while in the Marines. His girlfriend Maryam had come down to visit him and they wanted to take some couple portrait photos. We decided on taking them at San Onofre beach which is right on base. These two were great to shoot because they looked great together and assisted me a lot with holding the reflector when it was need. In this shot I used a silver reflector to bounce some of the direct sunlight back into the shadowed side of their faces. Fortunately the sun was coming close to setting so it wasn’t as strong. This is a RAW image file that I processed in Photoshop CS6.

Manhattan Beach Sunset

This is a photo that I took a few weeks back of Manhattan Beach when I drove up to Los Angeles. For this photo I didn’t have any other choice besides using the HDR technique to process it because of the look that I wanted to achieve. I could have gotten away without using the HDR technique but the pier would have turned to a silhouette against the background. This shot is made up of three exposure shot from a tripod at -3, 0, +3. All three exposures were lens corrected in Photoshop and saved as jpegs. They were then brought into Photomatix and combined into an HDR image. I have been trying to spend as little time as I can in Photomatix because I find that the longer I spend there the more crazy the effects turn out on my picture. Even the Photoshop processing on the picture was fairly minimal because all that was done were some level and curve adjustments and masking through to some of the original layers.

Getty White Room

This room was an area in one of the art museums at the Getty Museum. The Getty Museum is located just North of Los Angeles and has some awesome architecture there. The processing of this shot was somewhat of a process because I had to do some extensive straightening for the photo considering most of these lines were curved. I also fixed the whites in the photo to make them more pure because the sunlight coming in the window was casting a warm glow. I then desaturated the overall picture and did some curves and levels adjustments.

Korean Friendship Bell

This is a shot of the Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro, Los Angeles CA. I took this shot at sunset to get the best light I could. I had come to this place once before since I have been here in California but the first time it was under construction so I couldn’t get any good shots of it. It worked out nicely this time because there weren’t too many people there and no construction. The place where this bell is situation is on top of a hill overlooking the ocean which is an amazing view. This photo is made of 3 RAW image files that were combined in Photomatix and processed in Photoshop CS6 using the Topaz Adjust and Nik Color Effex plugins.

Flamingo

I have always loved the intense colors of these birds and never got a photo that I felt was good enough to display what I was seeing. I’m real happy with the way this one came out and feel like it really displays what I was going for.

Sunset in California

This shot was taken at a random beach near Aliso beach in Southern California. There were probably
over two hundred stairs that I had to walk down to get there but it was definitely worth it. There was barely anyone on the beach and it was real nice. If you like this shot check out my website at www.jswolfphotography.com
